4つのセレクトショップが手掛け、8月10日から販売をスタートさせたMRL996の別注モデル。

Collaboration model of MRL996 produced by four different selected shops launched in August 10th.

その舵取りをしたフイナム編集部も、記念に一足インラインのデザインを担当。そちらを手掛けた谷中氏にコンセプトを訊いていきます。

Since Houyhnhnm team has been supporting this project as the helm, newbalance Japan provided us to be in charge of designing one of inline color.Today, we will be interviewing an idea man, Mr. Ryutaro Yanaka, about the concept of shoes.


－まずは、どんなイメージで今回のMRL996をデザインしたのかを訊かせてください。

－First of all, please tell us the concept of MRL996 you have designed.

谷中龍太郎（以下谷中／敬称略）：　革靴っぽく履けるスニーカーをイメージしてデザインをスタートしました。

Ryutaro Yanaka：　The design concept of shoes is "a sneaker that could be worn like leather shoes."

－それでチョコレートブラウンを選んだわけですね。

－Is that the reason why you picked chocolate brown?

谷中：　はい。僕個人的にですが、あまり黒いシューズって履かないんです。そうなると自然にブラウンが候補となり、好きなカラーで、渋めに履けるチョコレートブラウンを選びました。もし可能ならばヌバックを選びたかったんですが、価格が上がってしまうと手に取りづらくなってしまうので、スエードでなるべく高級感のある佇まいというのにこだわりました。

Yanaka：　That is correct. This is my personal sense, but I usually don't wear black shoes so I picked brown as base color of this shoes. I especially like the one with dark toned color so I ended up picking chocolate brown. I wanted to pick nubuck leather to express richness but there were few difficult issues that I ended up choosing suede and focused on expressing luxury and rich taste out of it.

－それがあのゴールドの刺しゅうになるわけですか？

－Is that the reason why you chose gold embroidery work for tongue label?

谷中：　そうですね。なるべく削ぎ落として余計なカラーやディテールは取り入れず、あのゴールドの刺しゅうにして、そこだけが浮き出るようにしました。タンとかかとなので、通常の丈のパンツなら隠れてしまいますし、９分丈やショーツならアクセントになると思います。

Yanaka： 　That is true. I tried to minimize color pattern and detail to emphasize that gold part. They are used in tongue and heel of shoes so you can enjoy as an accent by changing length of pants you wear.

－他にこだわった部分はありますか？

－Any other part you particularly focused on?

谷中：　レザーシューズっぽいけれどニューバランスらしさを失わないことも意識しましたね。「革靴らしく」に徹底してこだわるなら"N"ロゴ下の部分も同色にしてしまえば、より革靴っぽく見えたと思うのですが、そこはあくまでスニーカーですし、ニューバランスと言えば暗闇でキラリと光るリフレクターですから、それは外したくなかったんです。そのリフレクターとソールのホワイトで、スニーカーらしさは残してみました。

Yanaka：　As I mentioned before, I wanted to make a sneaker that can be worn like leather shoes. But on the other hand, I wanted to keep new balance's attracting point. If I particularly focused on making leather shoes, I would use same color and material in each part of sneaker, but I used reflector material under "N logo" instead. I wanted to use reflector and white midsole to keep "sneaker" style.　

－となると、サンプル制作に苦労はありませんでした？

－Did you have any suffer making this shoes?

谷中：　いや。初めにお話を頂いたところから悩みだらけでしたよ。まず、いちメディアがスニーカーのデザインを手掛けて良いのかって。もし全然売れなかったらどうしよう...とか。ニューバランスの後押しを頂き、その不安を払拭できてからは、割りと順調でしたが、シューレースのカラーなど細かいところは何度も打ち合わせをして詰めていきました。　

Yanaka：　Well, it was full of suffer since the project started. First of all, we are web magazine editors and not professional sneaker designer. I had pressure of designing shoes that can be worn by many customers, but because of new balance's back up, the process of making it was not that tough. Though, we had many meeting to work on detail, such as color of shoe lace.

－完成したモデルを見て、いかがですか？

－What do you think about shoes you designed?

谷中：　素晴らしい出来映えだと思います。想像していた以上にカッコ良く仕上げて頂きました。周りからも良い評価を頂けていて、恐れ多い感じですが。これで売れてくれたら完璧ですね。

Yanaka：　It was more than I expected. I have received many good feedbacks from people around me, so only thing I expect is good sell through.

　

－このモデルは、どんな風に履きこなそうと考えていますか？

－How do you want to coordinate this shoes?

谷中：　暑いうちは素足にローファーを合わせるような感じで、リネンのシャツとショーツなんかに合わせて履くのが良いと思います。それで寒くなってきたら、フランネルのグレースラックスに合わせて、トップスはジャケットやカーディガンなど、ちょっと大人っぽく履きたいですね。
　
Yanaka：　During summer season, I would wear it like loafer without socks with shorts and linen shirts. For autumn/winter season, I would coordinate with flannel gray slacks and jacket or cardigan.
